NEW STORE NEWS
Reviews and Requests
From Alan Weisberg, BriarPatch Director
The rubber has now hit the road, or more accurately, the bulldozers have dug into the ground. Although I write this column the first week of May, by the time you read it construction on our new store will be underway. This is an exciting milestone in BriarPatch’s history, and a tribute to our current and past Boards of Directors, especially to longtime Board President Joseph Guida, our General Manager Paul Harton, and to all our owner-members, who so clearly expressed their interest in a bigger BriarPatch.
GREEN DESIGN
This is the third of a series of articles exploring some of the “green,” or sustainable building features to be incorporated in the new BriarPatch Co-op on Litton Hill. These measures each earn “points” toward U.S. Green Building Council LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification.
The intent is to achieve a higher level of energy performance and energy efficiency than is required by the state — California — that leads the country in required [building] energy performance.” — Jeff Gold, BriarPatch Co-op new store architect
Certainly the time to reduce energy use has come, and BriarPatch’s new store building will reflect this ideal by cutting down on energy consumption in several ways —some standard, some cutting edge.

The former teacher in me feels it’s important to review the nature of the project, and also to alert everyone of what we will need from you to make it the success we are all counting on.
Here are the highlights of the project:
The new store building will be owned by Calloway Development, which represents the interests of the Litton family. Jeff Gold is the architect, and Tim Brady of TruLine Builders is the construction contractor. Each works both for Calloway and for BriarPatch through separate contracts.
Of the 20,000-plus total square feet of interior space, BriarPatch will occupy 18,000 square feet, three times the size of our present store. The other 2,000 square feet will be leased by Calloway to other tenants, not yet identified. There will be parking for nearly a hundred cars, and the parking lot will have extensive plantings...

BUILDING BEGINS!
The ceremonial gold shovel struck
the dirt at BriarPatch's new store
building site just off the Sierra
College Drive roundabout on Tuesday,
May 16. Under the hot noontime sun a
hundred onlookers cheered at the commencement,
marked by short speeches by
several of the project's partners.
Grass Valley Mayor Gerard Tassone
called the project "a winner." Greg Francis
of Calloway Development, the property's
owner, welcomed everyone to the site
and credited BriarPatch owner-member
Tomas Kuzara-who was in attendance-
with originally proposing the idea.
Twenty-year BriarPatch employee Liz
Streater read BriarPatch's Mission Statement,
and General Manager Paul Harton
thanked the staff, Board of Directors,
and BriarPatch's various partners in
the project. Architect Jeff Gold spoke
of the importance of green, sustainable
design in today's world, and contractor
Tim Brady of Tru-line Builders noted
how the green building aspects of the
project may have impacts far beyond
this building alone. BriarPatch Board
President Joseph Guida served as
Master of Ceremonies and asked that
the crowd observe a moment of silence
for thanks and to honor "that which we
cannot see."
BriarPatch was closed for an hour
so that staff could attend the event.
(Apologies for the inconvenience to
anyone who missed their sandwich.)
